Thermal Rigid Board Foam: Polystyrene & Polyisocyanurate
Rigid plastic foam insulations include expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XEPS), polyisocyanurate (PIR), and polyurethane (PUR). Expanded polystyrene offers high R-values at low cost and is both moisture resistant and retains its properties over time. Extruded polystyrene - as compared to expanded polystyrene - has even greater resistance to moisture, weather, and temperature fluctuations. In particular, extruded polystyrene resists freeze/thaw damage and its R-value increases at lower temperatures making it suited for below-grade applications. Polyisocyanurate is a thermoset material and will remain rigid at elevated temperatures and, further, will not be affected by most solvents.
